  Initial Clinic Visit
bulletOffice schedules surgery
bulletPatient goes home, make appointments with Pre-Surgical Testing unit
bulletPatient needs to see Primary Care Physician 3-4 weeks before surgery
bulletIf you have a history of cardiac issues, please see your Cardiologist prior to seeing your Primary Care Physician

6 Weeks Before Surgery
bulletStop all vitamins, minerals, and supplements
bulletPatient goes to Lifesource for blood donation. Blood is good for 42 days. Donate first unit of blood for bilateral total knee replacement or total hip replacement

4 Weeks Before Surgery
bulletPatient goes to pre-surgical testing unit
bulletComplete lab work: urinalysis, blood chemistry, blood count, PT/INR
bulletElectrocardiogram (EKG)
bulletPossible stress test
bulletPatient begins to take oral iron supplement

2-3 Weeks Before Surgery
bulletStop taking NSAID’s and blood thinners unless discussed with Dr. Goldstein’s staff
bulletMay take Tylenol or Ultracet for pain

1 Week Before Surgery
bulletWash surgical knee or hip with Hibiclens soap daily
bulletOffice begins insurance calls

Surgery Day
bulletArrive at hospital
bulletPre-op antibiotic dose IV
bulletAfter surgery patient wears plexi-pulse boots and TED hose, starts Coumadin, pain control measures

Hospital Day 1
bulletCoumadin, plexi-pulse boots, TED hose, pain control measures
bulletAntibiotics for 24 hours
bulletGet out of bed, may ambulate
bulletPhysical therapy x 1

Hospital Day 2
bulletCoumadin, plexi-pulse boots, TED hose, pain control measures
bulletOral iron
bulletGet out of bed, ambulate
bulletRemove bulky dressings
bulletPhysical therapy x 2

Hospital Day 3
bulletCoumadin, plexi-pulse boots, TED hose, pain control measures
bulletGet out of bed, ambulate
bulletPhysical therapy x 1
bulletDischarged to home or extended care facility

Home or Extended care facility (ECF)
bulletIf in ECF, 7-14 days, depends on insurance and your surgery
bulletPT/INR drawn approximately twice a week
bulletCoumadin, TED hose, oral pain control measures
bulletOral iron and Vitamin C
bulletPhysical therapy in ECF daily, in the home, or as outpatient (x3 weekly)
bulletCan shower with assistance 1 week after surgery with the incision covered
bulletDressing checked and changed daily until no drainage. If incision is dry, it does not need to be covered.

Home
bulletCoumadin, TED hose, oral pain control measures
bulletPT/INR drawn approximately twice a week at home; results called in to Dr. Goldstein’s office
bulletPhysical therapy at home or out patient 3 times per week

Clinic Visit 3 Weeks Postoperatively
bulletWill be seen by Physician Assistant
bulletCan drive at 3-6 weeks, depending on pain medications
bulletStop iron, Vitamin C and Coumadin
bulletWound check and/or staples removed
bulletHip and revision patients have an x-ray
bulletPain medications if needed
bulletMaintain hip precautions for total hip replacement patients

Clinic Visit 6 weeks Postoperatively
bulletWill be seen by Dr. Goldstein
bulletAll patients have an x-ray
bulletTylenol for pain
bulletMaintain hip precautions

Clinic Visit 12 weeks Postoperatively
bulletWill be seen by Dr. Goldstein
bulletAll patients have an x-ray

Further Follow-up
bulletAt one year, then every 24 months unless a problem arises
